The industry’s focus has now shifted to second-generation sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), which are produced from non-food sources such as agricultural waste, algae, and industrial byproducts. These advanced biofuels avoid competition with food supplies, minimize the use of prime agricultural land, and reduce freshwater consumption. Studies by NASA have shown that a 50% blend of aviation biofuel can reduce air pollution caused by air traffic by 50-70%.

However, the current pace of sustainable aviation fuel certification and production remains insufficient to meet the International Air Transport Association (IATA) target of halving CO2 emissions by 2050. Aviation currently accounts for 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions, but this share is projected to rise to 3% by 2050 as air travel increases and ground vehicles transition to alternative fuels like ethanol and biodiesel.

To address this challenge, the aviation industry is exploring multiple strategies, including:

  • Developing more fuel-efficient aircraft.

  • Optimizing flight operations and air traffic management.

  • Transitioning to sustainable aviation fuels.

While research into solar, electric, and hydrogen-powered aircraft is ongoing, these technologies are not expected to be feasible in the near or medium term due to aviation’s stringent requirements for high power-to-weight ratios and globally compatible infrastructure.

Aviation biofuel remains one of the most viable and immediate solutions for reducing the industry’s environmental impact. By accelerating the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels, the industry can take meaningful steps toward achieving its climate goals and ensuring a greener future for air travel.
